More than meets the eye

So, Michelle, Crystal, myself and the kids all went to dinner tonight as Sake’s Japanese steakhouse near the Green and it was an…interesting dinner.

Interesting in the Murph-ical sense.

We ended up with an Indian cook on our hibachi. Now, when you go to certain restaurants, you have certain expectations. For example, if you go to a Mexican restaurants, you expect Mexican servers; be that expectation right or wrong, it’s what you expect. What I do not expect at a Japanese steakhouse is Habib.

Now, all things withstanding, I’ve no problem with having an Indian hibachi cook. And things wouldn’t have been bad had his idea of cooking not been “here let me just bang my utensils REALLY hard on the cook-top and maybe people will think I’m good!” No, people will think you’re banging really hard on the cook-top and will look with envy upon the other hibachis wondering “Why couldn’t I get that guy? Hey! he just flipped his spatula in the air and caught it behind his back!!! My guy sucks!”

Now, I’ll also admit to some not-so-politically-correct text messages to Michelle. Things along the lines of:

Would you like to buy a sushi slurpee?

He’s a hibachi terrorist!

BONZAI!!!! ALALALALALALALALALA!!!

and the obligatory:

Thank you, come again!

Bad, I know. I can’t help it.

On top of that, Logan managed to grab two plates and drag them off of the table and have them smash on the floor. And the sushi was warm.

All-in-all, it was still a fun night.

I’ve posted some of our vacation photos from the trip we just took to Illinois.

Yeah, I know. Vacationing in Illinois in winter isn’t the best idea ever. Still, we had some fun.

You go, boy

Deltus is my new personal hero.

I just wish the rudeness he mentions was limited to hotel hallways.

Baby update. Crystal’s dilated 2 cm and her Dr.’s ordered her home until the birth, which should be soon. My guess is within the week.

I WIN!

This reminds me of a little game Teh Remy and I invented in our younger days to entice certain girls out of their clothing. You might be surprised, but it actually worked.

Yaarrrr!

UPDATE (28-August-2006 10:20 am): Crystal has an appointment todayat around 1:30 to go over the results. I’m not sure what to make of the idea that they made an appointment. Something tell me that they wouldn’t need to if they didn’t find anything.

Crystal’s in the middle of a CT scan right now because she’s been getting a lot of headaches lately. Bad ones. Ones I’m surprised I’ve survived through.

On one hand, I hope they find out what’s wrong, but, on the other, I’m hoping it’s nothing serious.

I’ll update when she calls, but I doubt they’ll have the results right away.

I’m not dead yet! (Vacation redux)

I’m not dead, just really busy.

First thing to report: we trekked up to Illinois last week for a full week of vacation with my dad and his side of the family (Photos). My legs are still sore from all of the walking we did. Quick rundown of that week’s events:

  • Saturday: Nuthin’. Just loafed.
  • Sunday: Church. Birthday lunch for my cousin with the family. Birthday party at my Grandmother’s for the same cousin. Late night boat ride on the lake, courtesy of my Uncle Ray.
  • Monday: Hopped the 9:02 a.m. train to Chicago to meet up with my sister-in-law becaused we missed the 8:04. Met up with her in Chicago at about 10:30 and proceeded to spend the rest of the daywalking and getting lost on the streets of Chicago and hanging out at the Navy Pier.

Here is the rather unremarkable Boeing Building in Chicago. I only mention this hoping that people learn a lesson from this. That lesson is: Don’t hassle photographers that aren’t even taking pictures of your building. By doing so, you’re guaranteeing that he’s going to take a photo of it. Most likely while mouthing off. I’m just saying.

  • Tuesday: The Wisconsin State Fair. Lots of bad food. Lots of walking. Lots of fun.
  • Wednesday: The JellyBelly factory and gift shop. Meh. It was neat to see how jellybeans are made, but, other than that, not very entertaining. By the way, there are 1040 cans on the wall during the tour.

We also went to the Waukegan Museum. Unfortunately, we got there just shortly before they closed, so we didn’t have very long to wander around.

  • Thursday: Six Flags. I don’t have any photos from our trip there becuase, at first, I thought I’d be spending most of the day in the waterpark. I ended up not because it was cloudy and rainy most of the day, so I ended up not taking my camera because of that. I regretted that decision all day. Loads of fun, though and the temperature was great for the trip.
  • Friday: Nuthin’. Relaxed until we left for the long trek back to Ohio at 4 p.m.
  • Overall a really great trip, even if I didn’t get enough sleep. One of the surprises of the trip was that I found our I have a half-brother that I wasn’t really aware of. I was fairly certain my dad had other children (my mother and father are divorced), but I had never met any of them. Hanging out with Luke (my brother) and Ed (my step-mother’s son) was a blast whenever Ed could tolerate being in sunlight.

I still have more photos to upload, but I thought I’d shoot everyone a post letting them know that I wasn’t abducted by roaming bands of gay ninjas or slaughtered by genetically altered vampires (like Ed).

Since the vacation’s over, something close to normal posting should resume.

Weekend in review

“Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you” -Nathaniel Hawthorne

On Saturday, Crystal and I decided to take Shelby to the Butterfly House at the Cox Arboretum. Bad day. Seriously. It was about 96 degrees outside with little wind and almost no shade.

Still, Shelby had fun looking at the butterflies and the caterpillars, I got some good photos and even Crystal got into it.

Still, thought, it was way too hot to stay out there for any prolonged period of time, so, after about an hour and a half or so, we trucked on over to Cold Stone for some ice cream relief then over to Dorothy Lane Market for some dinner ideas. Rosemary-garlic lambchops with sweet pepper wild rice. It sounds good, but didn’t really come out right. The lamb was fattier than it looked and the rice just didn’t come out well at all. I’ll try it with leaner steaks next time and maybe do some rosemary-garlic mashed potatoes to go with it.

Sunday was a lounge day. We cleaned up the house a bit, did laundry, dishes, etc and I spent the rest of the evening on World of Warcraft while Crystal and Shelby watched movies (which I half payed attention to while playing).

All-in-all, a pretty good weekend.
