ActionNames

If anyone has the shareware version of Action Names 4.6 that you'd be willing to email me, could you leave me a comment? I regiestered version 4.6 but can't download it anymore as they've moved on to Agendus.

Phoenix 0.4

For those who use it, Phoenix 0.4 has just been released.

Make sure to read the warnings before installing.

EDIT: It appears to be more GTK-ish. I guess that's a good thing, but I like the look of the older scroll and progress bars better.

Office 11 Says Goodbye to Win9x

thoughts spawned from here.
Well, it had to happen eventually. Microsoft's fames Office package is leaving user's of it's older operating systems in the dust. I have mixed feelings about this bu, befroe I list them, I reiterate to everyone that I'm a linux guy first.

While I can understand why MS is doing this (legacy code support in windows is killing it slowly and causing a lot of security risks), I feel MS is leaving a pretty decently sized market share behind. Many businesses don't like upgrading if they can help it, so I know there's more than a few still running 9x.

MS is also requiring SP3 for win2k or Win XP before you can use Office 11. For those not in the know, SP3 gives MS some pretty heavy rights to do what they want with your machine. You pretty much give MS administration rights to your pc (which, incidentally, caused me to abandon the windows platform). By all rights I hear, XP is a decent enough OS, however, I WILL NOT buy a piece of software that requires me to give up personal information or phone home before I can use it.

I imagine what they're really trying to do is force people running older OSes to upgrade to something newer. I think what they're going to end up doing is forcing people to either free or lower-cost alternatives such as Star Office or Open Office.

Oh well, time will tell.

Gallery

I'm working on an image gallery. Right now only a few pics are up, but more to come. Keep checking over the next few days.

Privacy

My mother-in-law and I got into an interesting discussion over the weekend. We talked about certain things relating to our privacy and it showed what she thought of the subject.

After a decently civil conversation (I'd explain, but they might read this ;), she pretty much summed up her thoughts with "I don't really care what they do with my information as long as I get a good deal." And I'm quoting her.

This comment scared me more than a little. Is this how the majority of people see this? Have we gotten so lazy and eager for cheap/low cost items that we're willing to give up everything that is ourselves to get it? It's this attitude that makes identity theft one of the highest ranking crimes in America.

Personally, I don't even have a Kroger's card because I'm that paranoid (remember kids, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you). Personally, I feel that the stuff I buy is no one's business and building statistics on me and what I buy is outside my area of comfort. But I'm paranoid.

I just hope that people wake up and see what's going on before it's too late.

Blarg, Part Duex

Oh man, what a night.

I get home from a ver exhaustive day at work to find that the window near my computer equipment (DSL modem, wireless router and 2 printers) had leaked water all over the place during th monsoon we got yesterday. After many unkind words about the owners of the aparments in which I live, I quickly begaun turning everything off, unhooking everything, then relocating everything to the dry end of the room.

Next comes the phone call to the Manager, which I made my wife do so I wouldn't say anything I regret. They agree to send someone out to look at it.

Of course, with all of this, I still don't know if someone came out as I had to rush my wife to the hospital becaus she was going through pretty hard contractions. Several months early. They do the tests and make sure she has medications, etc, etc. There's 5 hours gone, but at least the wife and baby are ok.

Today, I try to re-assemble my computer equipment, between calls from the wife requesting things, and my DSL modem and my wireless route quit talking to each other. No net, no real ability to get answers. So, after 2 hours of many unkind words toward linksys and Ameritech, the modem and router magically start working.

And you thought weekends were for relaxing.

I guess the fact that all my earlier plans for the weekend bombed out is a good thing. I'm not sure I can handle any mroe of this "relaxing".

Run Down

It's 1:00p.m. and I'm having *the* hardest time focusing on my task list. Scratch that. I'm having *the* hardest tims just staying awake. I have a can of Red Bull on my desk, but I'm not sure I want to open that can of worms (every pun intended) as the highest level of caffinee I ingest is Mt. Dew.

To boot, I have to work on User Documentation. I HATE user documentation.

if ( $TASK == "user documentation" ) then

Free Tech Books

TCFB has started a repository for free online techical ebooks. Most revolve around the opensource world, but I'm sure more will be added in the future.

SATA

I just caught an article on /. concerning Serial ATA technology.

I had heard things about SATA before, my motherboard already has 2 SATA connectors. However, I could never find any real information on it until now. All I can say it WOW! 600 MB/sec by 2007! You can read more about it here.

Posting

The past few weeks I've been out of pocket to a great group of guys that really got me my start in things such as handheld computers (Palm, PocketPc, etc) and blogging.

For those that don't know, I'm one of the posters at happypalm.com. I used to be known as PalmSorcerer, but now just post as stareja as it sounds a little less........anyway, happypalm was my first real home on the net and was invited by the site's owner, Chuck to become an author.

Things went really well for quite a while. Then this strange thing called life interviened. Several system failures, upgrades, instances of real life popping up have prevented happypalm from becoming the popular site it should be.

I guess I just really want to say that I'm sorry and I hope to be more prominent in the future.

System Outage

Well, I'm supposed to be writing scripts that test our COTS (Current Off The Shelf) software on our big irons. This has turned out to be an impossible task right now as our entire site is down for upgrades. :-(

I got on long enought ot squash most of the bugs in the scripts, but I have anagging feeling that there are still some lurking around. Hopefully I can get back on before the end of the day. I'd tell you what the systems are, but then I'd have to shoot you ;-)

Unix-Girl

Just found this blog today and I must say, I'm quite impressed with the content. A very nice blend of technology and personality, not to mention she has pretty eyes.

Hopefully, I can get into this blog-thing as much as Kasia does. Oh, I've also linked to her blog in my "BLOGS! BLOGS! BLOGS!" section for your clicking enjoyment. I've also added links to Jon's blog and Chuck's blog. Both good reads when updated.

RedHat 8.0 Xmms bug

If you have Redhat 8.0 and xmms without the KDE environment installed, xmms will segfault. You need to install the aRTs sound daemon as a workaround. You can find it here. After installing it, you can use the redhat updater program to upgrade to the latest version.

Off to bed.

Computer Fun

Well, a friendly trip to the local computer store where I bought my parts yielded I'm a moron.

The tech took the board, processor and memory (keep in mind neither the memory nor the processor had left the motherboard) into the back to look at it. About 20 minutes after he took the parts, he brought me back to show a fully POSTing system. All I could spit out was what I had done to diagnose the problem and stare at the screen in disbelief. The teck contributed the problem to a possible short in the case and I sorta have to believe him.

Anyways, I now have afully functioning 1.4 GHz Athlon XP system with 256 MB DDR 3200 ram, 5 USB 2.0 ports and a Dolby Digital 5.1 compatible sound card. Can't wait until they start making the 512 MB sticks of 3200.

Quickie

Just a quick post from an alternate computer to let anyone reading know that I might not be able to post for a while. My main PC died after a weekend upgrade. Diagnostic LEDs point to a bad CPU, which would explain why it doesn't POST anymore.

Only got to experience the joy of 1.4 GHz speed for a short time and I want MORE! ;-)

Gaim .59.5

Gaim 0.59.5 had been released. Download it now.

DMCA Moronics

I never thought I'd actually see this. Red Hat has restricted access to it's latest security patch. If you want to read it, renounce your US citizenship.

That's right. US citizens or those who live under the jurisdiction of the US government cannot view the details of this security patch because of the controversial and rediculous DMCA.

For those of you not in the know, the DMCA is a bill that congress passed into law that, among other things, make it illegal to bypass or traffic in information that explains how to bypass encryption of any kind, be it hardware-based or software based. For any reason.

Since Red Hat would naturally explain how you would be vulnerable if you don't apply the fix, they are guilty of traffiking in illegal information as they've just released information on how to bypass some sort of encryption. I'd have more information, but I'm not allowed to read it.

This is what we've been forced into. Ther is actually a website out there dedicated to keeping information away from US citizens because our damn congressmen are more concerned with interest group donations and catering to large companies that want to restrict our rights rather than do their bloody jobs and *represent us*.

Do yourselves a favor. Educate yourselves. Make a difference.

Ya know, sometimes I wonder why I live in this country. With the government going th eway it is, it's no longer the "Land of the Free", but instead, the "Land of the buck". The land where, if enought money is thrown at the government, anything can be restricted. Disagree? Contact your government representative and have the laws changed. I'll eat a printed copy of this article if that happens.

Blarg

Man, what a day. I had to spend most of the day to day extracting results of disk IO tests into comma separated value files to be imported into Excel. Not really touch, just monotonous, boring and repedative. It was very tough on the mind. Some would call it, mind-numbing! At least I don't have to do the charts.

Sanity

Ok, sanity check.

The latest craze seems to be this blogging thing. People putting their lives online for everyone to read. I was very curious why people chose to do this, I mean some people put some very personal stuff on these things.

Then I started reading a few of these blogs and realized that a lot of people do this for therapudic reasons. Keeps 'em sane in a sick and voyeristic sort of way. So I figured, what the heck. Worst case is I'm out monthly hosting, which I've blown more on lunch.

I'll consider it a social experiment. Who knows, maybe it'll be widely read like the lockergnome bloggers. Maybe people I don't even know'll recognize me on the street and say hi. Yeah. Maybe I'm a Chinese fighter pilot (apologies to Bruce campbell).

.....Get Chuck his medication. Without it, things like that last post happen......
