HowTo Convert OpenXML files to OpenDOC under Linux

UPDATE: For everyone else, or those who hate command lines, there’s Zamzar

If you’ve started getting OpenXML (Microsoft’s “open” format; .docx, .xlsx, etc) and you use Linux, you can use this to convert them to OpenDOC format.

Of course, your mileage may vary. It worked for me, but I imagine it could fall apart on complex documents.

Wait, what?

Oh my God, StarDock actually GETS IT!

I’m certainly going to have to throw them some support.

Shocking news, DOJ doesn’t want to be RIAA’s lapdogs

Ina shocking note to the Senate, the Department of Justice has said they would prefer to fight crime rather than be Big Media’s copyright watchdog.

Think I’m going to have to side with the DOJ on this one:

“in an era of fiscal responsibility, the resources of the Department of Justice should be used for the public benefit, not on behalf of particular industries that can avail themselves of the existing civil enforcement provisions.”

Jack Thompson disbarred in florida

Jack Thompson loses boss battle with Florida Bar.

While I usually try not to wallow in the misery of others, I do believe this weekend is a special time for celebration. Maybe we should start an internet holiday for it. Yes, Jack Thompson Disbarred Day does have a certain ring to it.

It’s not a tumor!!!

Austrian Death Machine. A death metal band who’s songs are made entirely of Arnold Schwarzenegger movie quotes. Their current works include the smash hits “It’s not a tumor”, “Who is your daddy and what does he do?” and “Get to the choppa”, among others.

I’m not sure whether I should be immensely amused or massively disturbed.

UPDATE: ‘ere ’tis. And it’s FREE!

What happens if someone blatantly rips off your product’s design and function and incorporates it into antoher product? If you’re Pop Cap Games, you hire them to finish the product for your own use.

In this case, a gamer coded a World of Warcraft version of BeJeweled he dubbed BeShared. When Pop Cap games heard about it, they opted to take the sane route and work with the guy to mutual benefit instead of suing him out of existence.

Personally, I hope this opens up a new world of game-with-a-game addons. I can imagine gathering up some of my guildmates for a friday night raiding session, followed by a poker night where you can bet with your in-game gold. I an also imagine things like in-game casino’s sprouting up. There’s a huge opportunity here if someone’s willing to grab onto it.

I have returned!

Alrighty. Those of you outside the borders of the grand state of Ohio may not have heard, but last weekend, courtesy of hurricane Ike, we got one of the worst wind storms in Ohio history. Sustained gusts of up to 70 MPH over the course of several hours.

The resulting damage consisted of downed trees across the state and, along with the downed trees, downed power lines. Destroyed transformers. Substations off-line. At one point, depending on whom you believe news-wise, there were between 100,000 and 500,000 homes and businesses without power throughout the state. One-third of all the traffic lights in the entire state were down. I, myself, was without power for 6 days and I know of people who went 9.

My only source of internet access (other than my work PC), was my Palm Centro. Not a fun experience for an extended period.

Everything seems to be back up and working now, except for a few spots here and there. I have some shingles to replace and a section of gutters that need re-hung. Others were not so lucky.

My mother mentioned that a trailer in her area had it’s roof ripped off by the winds. Instead of just letting it go, the owners, along with some other less0than-bright individuals, decided to try and put it back on on the heat of the windstorm. One of the poor fellas was lifted off the ground when an updraft caught the roof and decided to take it for a ride. he’s not in the hospital with a punctured lung, cracked or broken pelvis, several broken ribs, several broken lower lumbar vertebrae and the bills to go along with them. I doubt very much that he has health insurance.

So, I’m back, with an internet connection, no one I know was hurt and no serious damage to my house. All-in-all, I have a lot to be thankful for.
