The Christian Hurd

Interesting. Christian-centric versions of Linux.

Ubuntu: Christian Edition (not officially supported by Canonical):

The goal of Ubuntu Christian Edition is to bring the power and security of Ubuntu to Christians. Ubuntu Christian Edition is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu release supports PC (Intel x86).

Ichthux (based off of KUbuntu):

Ichthux is an operating system aimed at Christian users. It is based on Kubuntu in order to provide the best desktop environment of the moment, together with Christian programs and settings. For a brief graphical tour of Ichthux, check out some screenshots.

It’s nothing that you can’t install yourself without these two “distros”*, but I’m sure there’s people out there that’d like them. The parental controls pre-installed and offered by Ubuntu: Christian Edition would be good for families and parents unfamiliar with computers. Again, though, it’s nothing you can’t get yourself.

We’ll see how they do.

Yup, there’s a cat in there

UPDATE (28-August-2006 10:20 am): Crystal has an appointment todayat around 1:30 to go over the results. I’m not sure what to make of the idea that they made an appointment. Something tell me that they wouldn’t need to if they didn’t find anything.

Crystal’s in the middle of a CT scan right now because she’s been getting a lot of headaches lately. Bad ones. Ones I’m surprised I’ve survived through.

On one hand, I hope they find out what’s wrong, but, on the other, I’m hoping it’s nothing serious.

I’ll update when she calls, but I doubt they’ll have the results right away.

Don’t believe everything you see on TV

UPDATE (24-August: 3:32 pm): Hey, if you can’t persuade people with facts, hire someone to lie. Why not, it works with politicians.

I don’t really have anything more to add to John’s rant about the recent commercials (paid for by media companies) shooting down net neutrality, except to emphasize that these telecom and cable comapnies are scumbags to a degree that words just can’t convey.

Also, don’t believe a word these commercials say, it’s completely fabricated and they should feel lucky that lying to customers in this fashion isn’t illegal.

If you want the REAL skinny on Net Neutrality, check out its Wikipedia entry, read Save the internet.com and think for yourselves, people.

Remember, the people paying for these commercials are the same people that have the most to gain from a non-neutral internet. They’re the ones that want to charge different prices for different access to different site.

Want guaranteed access to Google Video? Better pay-up bucko.

You want to make sure you’re going to win that ebay auction, right? Well, it’d be a real shame if something were to happen to that connection during that time, wouldn’t it. Well, we can make sure that connection stays there. For a price.

If net neutrality isn’t preserved, we’d be entering into an era of digital racketeering akin to gang shake-downs and mobsters. The only difference is, these gangsters and mobsters donate to political campaigns, so their pet congressmen take care of the legalities.

If you’re congress-critters aren’t annoyed every time they see your name, you’re not doing your job as a citizen.

Online play with Nintendo Revolution will be free

Posted by J.A.S.O.N. on 23 Aug 2006 | Tagged as: Games, Tech

That’s what daddy likes to hear.

“We will offer online-enabled games that the consumers will not have to pay a subscription fee for,” he (Nintendo of America’s president, Reginald Fils-Aime) said. “They’ll be able to enjoy that right out of the box.” Fils-Aime also mentioned that the Wii Revolution will be WiFi enabled, so it will be able to join existing wireless networks without any extra cabling.

John, when a revolution, WiFi-enabled version of Mario Kart comes out, it’s on like Donkey Kong!

You know America’s dead when…

The 10 year-old murder (while tragic) of JonBenet Ramsey is headlined over the fact that our President was found to have violated the Constitution. In fact, the illegal, warrantless wiretap story doesnt’ even appear on CNN at all anymore. Under neither the “Top Stories” nor the “Most Popular” tabs.

This tells me that the majority of American citizens are more interested in a single murder that happened 10 years ago (again, I’m not dismissing how tragic the event was) than in the death of our own rights.

I’ve given up hope that this is going to end well, if at all.

“For the people”, indeed.

I’m not dead yet! (Vacation redux)

I’m not dead, just really busy.

First thing to report: we trekked up to Illinois last week for a full week of vacation with my dad and his side of the family (Photos). My legs are still sore from all of the walking we did. Quick rundown of that week’s events:

  • Saturday: Nuthin’. Just loafed.
  • Sunday: Church. Birthday lunch for my cousin with the family. Birthday party at my Grandmother’s for the same cousin. Late night boat ride on the lake, courtesy of my Uncle Ray.
  • Monday: Hopped the 9:02 a.m. train to Chicago to meet up with my sister-in-law becaused we missed the 8:04. Met up with her in Chicago at about 10:30 and proceeded to spend the rest of the daywalking and getting lost on the streets of Chicago and hanging out at the Navy Pier.

Here is the rather unremarkable Boeing Building in Chicago. I only mention this hoping that people learn a lesson from this. That lesson is: Don’t hassle photographers that aren’t even taking pictures of your building. By doing so, you’re guaranteeing that he’s going to take a photo of it. Most likely while mouthing off. I’m just saying.

  • Tuesday: The Wisconsin State Fair. Lots of bad food. Lots of walking. Lots of fun.
  • Wednesday: The JellyBelly factory and gift shop. Meh. It was neat to see how jellybeans are made, but, other than that, not very entertaining. By the way, there are 1040 cans on the wall during the tour.

We also went to the Waukegan Museum. Unfortunately, we got there just shortly before they closed, so we didn’t have very long to wander around.

  • Thursday: Six Flags. I don’t have any photos from our trip there becuase, at first, I thought I’d be spending most of the day in the waterpark. I ended up not because it was cloudy and rainy most of the day, so I ended up not taking my camera because of that. I regretted that decision all day. Loads of fun, though and the temperature was great for the trip.
  • Friday: Nuthin’. Relaxed until we left for the long trek back to Ohio at 4 p.m.
  • Overall a really great trip, even if I didn’t get enough sleep. One of the surprises of the trip was that I found our I have a half-brother that I wasn’t really aware of. I was fairly certain my dad had other children (my mother and father are divorced), but I had never met any of them. Hanging out with Luke (my brother) and Ed (my step-mother’s son) was a blast whenever Ed could tolerate being in sunlight.

I still have more photos to upload, but I thought I’d shoot everyone a post letting them know that I wasn’t abducted by roaming bands of gay ninjas or slaughtered by genetically altered vampires (like Ed).

Since the vacation’s over, something close to normal posting should resume.
