AT&T wants you to double pay for everything net related

Posted by J.A.S.O.N. on 31 Jan 2006 | Tagged as: Internet, Rants, Tech

AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre is an idiot and they’re playing right into Google’s hand.

Think about it. Google’s bought up a ton of dark fiber, email, blogging, rumors of a Google PC, rumors of a Google-branded version of Ubuntu, IM, Picasa, Google Earth. Seriously, who has the most to gain from the Balkanization of the net?

They just need to rebrand themselves as Skynet and stop with the stalling.

In the meantime, I’m adding AT&T to the list of companies never to buy anything from.

Hair bands suck

Dear Spike TV,

I’m sick of seeing the Monster Ballads cinfomercial during Ever. Single. Commercial. Break. There is a reason none of these bands are making news albums anymore. And the whole “You can’t find these two CDs in stores anywhere”? Yeah, I’m not thinking that’s because you have a corner on them, it’s because no one else wants them.*

Please, please, please, by all that is holy, STOP PLAYING THE COMMERCIAL!

*I’m not counting Silent Lucidity by Queensryche, because Queensryche rocks.

RFID the mark of the beast?

I never thought I’d come down on the same side as fundamentailist Christians on a matter of technology. Namely RFID chips. ‘Tis weird.

Darn, I’ve already used the pot and kettle reference…

Isn’t the idea of lobbyists fighting lobbyism reforms akin to telemarketers fighting the do not call registry? Might their complaints be just a tad bit biased? I’m just sayin’.

Windows version of KDE? Hells yeah!

Posted by J.A.S.O.N. on 30 Jan 2006 | Tagged as: Tech

Despite the hesitation from parts of the KDE community mentioned in the article about a Windows-native version of KDE, I wouldn’t hesitate to install it if it were available. Especially if it lead the way to windows-native versions of software that runs within KDE, like K-office and such.

New broadcast flag in doubt

This is, indeed, good news, though I think I may have a brain aneurysm at the prospect of someone on capitol hill having a clue.

Flickr’s RSS feeds are on crack

Posted by J.A.S.O.N. on 27 Jan 2006 | Tagged as: Babble, Internet

They are. Seriously. Somehow or another, all the newly posted photos have gotten intermixed between the different feeds. John’s feeds have photos from at least 7 other users. The same is true for everyone else’s feeds.

Screwed up, I tell ya.

Weekend shoot

Posted by J.A.S.O.N. on 27 Jan 2006 | Tagged as: Friends & Family, Photography

Photos here. Even Crystal got in on the photo taking.

The weather channel’s guess as to what the weekend’s going to be like looks pretty promising. Mid-50’s with a chance of rain Sunday.

It’s been a while since Crystal and I have had a date night, so I was thinking that maybe I would take her out to a local nature park on Saturday. I’m really hoping to get her somewhat into photography, so maybe some photo-shooting. Follow that up with an early dinner and movie rental and I’m hoping to actually have some fun with my wife.

Having to deal with job changes, a new puppy and Shelby, well, let’s just say things have been a tad monotonous of late.

Ooohhh…wait. An arboritum sounds much better! Yeah, that’ll do.

Remember that scene from scanners…

While I’m not a huge fan of the Iraqi war, I am forced to wonder that, if this is true, the entire Democratic Party’s heads would all explode at the same time.

Bonus points to the person that nails the movie the title is from.

New camera

Posted by J.A.S.O.N. on 26 Jan 2006 | Tagged as: Babble, Photography

I took the plunge and bought the Rebel XT. It’s amazing how differently people look at you when you have a DSLR. I’ve already had requests of photos from several family members, my sister in law wants me to do her wedding photos and even a coworker or two wants portraits.

I realize that it’s because they’re looking for a deal and they know me, but it’s a bit freaky because I don’t really consider myself anything but a beginning amatuer photographer. I have problems with picking the right exposure, I’m still working in learning the camera and I have almost no knowledge of more advanced equipment such as lightboxes and flash umbrellas. I’m getting better at low-light photography, mostly because the XT can do low-light without a flash and my previous Kodak DX6490 couldn’t without a flash, but I just think I have a long way to go before I consider myself “good”. I’ve also been accused of being my own worst critic, something I don’t consider a bad thing.

Anyways, I was practicing with low-light macro photos (something I have a hard time with) and thought I’d share the results. Here’s my favorite from the set I did.

You can see all my macro shots here, but only the last 7 were done with the XT. Of course I’m open to constructive critisism. :-)
