Goodbye Lacey

Posted by J.A.S.O.N. on 30 Oct 2005 | Tagged as: Babble

Saturday evening, around 4:30 or 5 pm (I’m not ecatly sure of the time) my Yorkie Lacey was struck by a vehicle after she got out of our back yard. At around 7 that same night, Crystal and I had to make the terrible decision to put her down.

The impact had broken her back and her pelvis in three places. She’d never be able to use her hind legs or control her bodily functions, assuming they even still worked. There was nothing that could be done.

I’m tired, sad and very close to tears as I write this. It’s going to be very hard to get along “normally” over the next few months until we’re ready to start looking for a new Yorkie as a new pet, but Lacey could never be replaced, and I’ll never try. I’m not sure when or if I’m going to be posting again. The next few weeks are going to be very hard.

I’m sorry, puppy. Goodbye, you’ll be missed more than you can ever know.

Now, if only they’d predict my lotto numbers…

My horoscope today:

Tilt your head back and take a gander at the skies above you. Look like there’s a storm coming? Sure is — and it’s going to be a great, big one. Does that mean your world will be blown apart? Hardly. The difference between whether this turns out to be a great day or a bad one lies in your attitude — and that’s the only variable over which you’ll have control. Smile, then. A lot.

Yeah. No kidding…

TmsT’s Zero Wing Rhapsody

I forgot where I got the original link, but it’s hilarious in a very sick sort of way.

Flickr finally does photo printing

FINALLY!

What’s even cooler is that you can have them delivered to your local Target store if you’re squeemish about photos getting bent-up in the mail.

…and twins!

Somehow I doubt Budweiser Coors (as John so politely corrected me) had this in mind when fashioning their famous “Twins” marketing ploy:

So, any way you can arrange to get Brian’s autograph for me, John? :-)

Yes, I’m cruel to my friends.

iMesh goes legit, I lose interest

iMesh goes legit, if such a thing is even fair to say about a P2P service. A true P2P service should concentrate on allowing user to trade any of their files online, not catering to the whims of the RIAA/MPAA. Their website now highlights movie and music transfers instead of general file-swapping. Though to be fair, I suppose, those are pretty much the only traded files on P2P.

It’s not that I find the model bad, I really don’t. It’d be sweet to have another EMusic.com that caters to more mainstream music, but I lost all interest I might have had with this little snippet:

Like the basic subscription services from Yahoo, Napster and others, those downloaded songs will be locked to PCs, and cannot be transferred to iPods or other devices.

Read this as DRM. I currently buy all of my music from All of MP3.com and am seriously considering subscribing to EMusic.com once we get some bills paid off. I would love to have a US-based version of All of MP3, but it seems that if you’re not whoring yourself out to the RIAA/MPAA and the DRM they shove down your throat, you can’t even sit at their discussion table.

One of my co-workers recently bought a DRM-crippled song from Amazon (or maybe Yahoo!, I don’t remember, exaclty) and wanted to use it in a presentation he prepared for a class. He was mildly curious why it wouldn’t play and was quite irked when I explained DRM and licensing and such to him. I think his exact quote was “I’ll stick to CDs from now on”. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that the industry is working on DRMing those as well.

I like to think of it like voting. By buying this stuff, you’re giving them permission to tell you what you can do with the stuff you buy and you have no room to complain when it bites you in the ass.

So, how do I cash in?

Nights on Neverwinter Nights

Posted by J.A.S.O.N. on 25 Oct 2005 | Tagged as: Babble, Games

Man, I’m so hooked on Neverwinter Nights right now. I’ve actually had the game for quite some time, but never put a lot of time into it. I’ve been giving it a serious go this time around and am loving my little halfling rogue/ranger.

I can’t wait to check out the online play features, maybe some player-written modules. They even have premium modules that you can buy for a couple of bucks. Almost makes me wish that there were some local friends that play D&D.

Yes, it sounds dorky. No, I don’t care.
