I’m doing a virtual Day of Silence in memory of the passing of Mr. Fred Rogers, so I won’t be posting anymore today.
You’ll remember him as the host of the PBS show, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. For 30 years he devoted his life to teaching children how to handle life’s everyday problems in ways they can understand.
You’ll be missed, sir.

Shelby is now 2 months old. She had had her 2 month immunizations today and I’ll tell you somthing, nothing will break a father’s heart faster than hearing his little girl cry like that.
Yeah, I’m a softie.

I’m now proudly running MT 2.63. I don’t see many differences yet, but it seems slightly faster.
I’ve also installed the Logitech webcam, but I’m still torn between it and the Intel. The Logitech can capture images faster (faster FPS recognition), but the Intel takes slightly better quality. Oh well, I got a few days to tinker before I decide to buy it or not.

I plan on trying to upgrade the site to Movabletype 2.63 tonight. If the site goes down of freaks out, you know the upgrade didn’t go well.
I’m also testing out a new webcam. I currently use an Intel Easy PC Camera, but a friend loaned me a Logitech Quick Cam. Yeah, it’s the older one, but, if it turns out better than my intel cam, I can start another webcam up in the apt. Maye the Crystal Cam, Shelby Cam or even the Lacey Cam (which should actually give you something to look at as Lacey is in her crate the majority of the day).

[From Slashdot]
Slashdot has an article talking about how major businesses are supressing the talents of scripters because they don’t consider scripting as actual programming.
I have to disagree with that sentiment. Being a scripter for the company I work for, I can say that scripting can be just as difficult as “true” programming. I can also say that I can do things faster in scripts than most can in compiled code. Coding is coding, regaardless of whether your code is compiled or interpereted.
Also, supressing that kind of talent in your business is just stupid. If you can solve a problem in an hour with a script, why not use it rather than wait the 3 weeks it takes your developers to outline the problem and write a program to solve it that doesn’t crash teh system (in case of C or C++, which allows for serious system control/abuse).
I love scripting, it’s what’s gotten me this far in my career and anyone telling me that my skills are inferior to those of a “true” programmer is gonna get my boot in a very uncomfortable place.
Sorry about that. Had to rant and geek out at the same time. I now return you to your regularly scheduled off-topic posts.

You’ve got to be bloody kidding me!
Found the link on Dawn’s site.
What a bunch of retards. Wait, that’s insulting the mentally-challenged. What do these people hope to accomplish by doing this? If a war breaks out, they’ll be considered casualties of war.
That is, if they stick around after the bullets start flying.

Just read that the ogg vorbis guys have managed to talk Neuros into supporting both Ogg Vorbis AND Linux.
As the article put it:
“It means Vorbis support for a portable player. It means Linux interoperability for a portable player that’s supported by the manufacturer, not an after-market hack supported by some guy in Johannesburg with a dialup connection and a copy of emacs. It means that you’ll be able to go out and buy a portable audio device that will play Vorbis and support Linux at your local CompUSA.
How cool is that? “
I’d say it’s very cool, guys. Can’t wait to see how much they enter in at.

Why don’t I get a warm fuzzy from this article?
Maybe it’s the following statement:
“Because EFI has its own filing system that lives on a reserved part of the hard disk, it can become the standard home for a whole set of utilities that have always had an awkward fit with the BIOS. Digital rights management and security designers also have an interest in EFI because it gives them a new level of control over the hardware.”
How can we hammer it into these people’s heads that forcing DRM onto people is going to do nothing but make criminals out of society? It sounds to me like the technology world is going to face it’s own prohibition, and we all remember the history lessons on how that turned out. When you make criminals out of society, it’s time to re-think the rules, else society’ll re-think them for you.

The lan party the other night was a tad disapointing. Not for lack of effort or attendance or enthusiasm, but due to problems with compatibility.
We had so many problems with so many games, that the only thing everyone could play reliably was unreal tournament and gunman chronicles.
We tried Alien vs. Predator, which would have been a blast, but two people there couldn’t join the game. They could see it, but not join. What’s worse is that the website for the game had absolutely no useful information on troubleshooting any sort of problems with the game. Which is sad, because it’s a very fun game multiplayer.
Half-life was a disaster. the sheer number of patches required to play it caused so many compatibility problems and confusion that we gave up on it very quickly.
Gunman Chronicles worked, but just wasn’t that fun. Unreal Tournament was great, as always. I just wish we could have gotten AVP to work. That was the biggest let down.
I had the camera up during the lan party, but the lighting caused serious quality issues with it.
