Tis the season

I certainly wish I could mention what I’ve been doing over the past few days, but I can’t as most of it pertains to certain people’s Christmas presents and I can’t very well go and spoil the surpise, now can I?

What I can tell you, though, is that I’m having a pretty good week so far. I got to upgrade my wife’s computer. It now mirrors mine pretty well:

  • Athlon XP 1700+ (1.4 GHz)
  • 256 MB DDR Ram
  • ATI Radeon 7000
  • 20GB Western Digital 7200 RPM Hard Drive
  • C|Media Dolby Digital 5.1 compatible Sound card
  • MSI KT4 Ultra Motherboard
  • 52x CDROM

The primary differences between the two are just the hard drive, vid card and CDROM. I have a GeForce 2 Ultra, a 40 GB Hard Drive and a 32×10x12 CD burner. Pretty spiffy.

Ragnarok is back up today. I won’t get to play it until around 6 or so, but am looking forward to it as it’s been down for roughly a week. I hope that they have some of the lag issues resolved. Can’t wait to wreak havok with my hurricane broadsword!’

I’ve also been tinkering with the idea of adding a forum to the site. Any thoughts from theose that read the site? I know you’ve been reading it, I can see the hits in my logs! ADMIT IT! Anyways. It would be a cool thing to have to talk to my friends and such.

I got some cool pictures to put up from a christmas party I went to. I think I’ve found a mascot for the site; Harry the christmas lobster! Yup, you heard me. the christmas lobster!

Umm….On a side note. If anyone’s compiled Mozilla 1.2.1 on an SGI IRIX system, could you lend a helping hand and leave a comment?

Hope everyone has a merry christmas and a happy new year.

Well, I’ve worked through the other problems just to run into a coding error. I feel like screaming. Really. Really. Loud. I’ve very little knowledge of C++ and my chances of debugging this are slim to none.

Guess I’ll have to call in some help on this one. Chuck? How good are you at C++?

Mozilla

I’ve been put in charge of installing Mozilla and making it available to all of our SGi and Linux systems. This has come in light that Netscape and SGI no longer support Netscapes older than version 6 and, of course, our training dept. has written a page for people to sign up for classes that only works in IE and Netscape 6.0 and above.

The Linux version went well because I just had to download the binayr. Everything was statically linked and self-contined, so no fuss, no muss.

Now the SGI build is a different story. First, the only binary they support is for version 1.1b. Nothing newer. Not to mention the only binayr I could get (the 1.1b version) was using shared objects, which meant I had to install a bunch of crap if I wanted to work. Not possible in our environment.

Now I’m not my 30th attempt to build this bastard in about 3 days. I’ve had to installe 3rd party tools (self-contained libraries and executeables) and statically link everything because the symbol table gets full if I try shared objects. If I bump up the maximum size of the symbol table, it compiles, but I get rld mapping errors because it can’t find the libraries.

GGGRRR……..It’s been going since about 11:00 am. We’ll see if it finishes. If it doesn’t, those who are offended by harsh language may want to avoind my site for a little while.

Ok, so it looks like I need to take up some more room so that my stylesheet will render correctly. How retartded. I wonder if MT has been updated to fix that yet?

Oh well, I guess I could find something to chat about for a few paragraphs.

I’ve decided to move my home system back to windows 2000 as it’s main OS. I love linux, but, with the amount of time I plan to spend on gaming in the near future, linux just won’t do. An I really don’t like dual booting.

It’s really too bad. Red Hat 8 is a really good linux distro and I had it setup perfectly. . I’m a gamer at heart and windows just has better games.

Ragnarok. The bane of my free time. This game is the incarnation of wasted time. And I love it. BTW, if anyone reading this is involved in the beta, my name in RO is Mikal. Feel free to whisper me or chat with me. I’m hanging out in the Agros froest right now. Well, I will be at around 5:30 PM EST, anyway.

Which bring sup another thing that’s been driving me crazy in the game. The self-appointed, holier than thou “RO police”. To give alittle background, Gravity doesn’t allow bots in RO (Ragnarokonline). They feel it brings a certain unfairness to the game and they also have security concerns with them. Well there are people in the game that are hell bent on removing every last bot from the game. To the point that innocent people have gotten banned because of these morons. In my eyes, they’re causing mroe of a problem to the game than the bots.

My stance is simple and to the point. It’s not up to users/players to monitor everyone to see if they’re a bot. I believe that gravity should monitor the system and remove the bots.

These “brilliant” players have taken to harassing other players on a constant basis with their “inquiries”. If the player doesn’t respond to them (I’d ignore them, also), they report the player as a bot. I feel this is harrassment. Plain and simple.

I wish they would just wake up and plathe damn game. That’s what we’re supposed to be doing.

Also, if anyone reading this cruises the RO.pak0 forums, my handle there is stareja. I’ve made my point loud and clear in those forums, so feel free to search for my username and see my feelings on the matter..

Outside of that, the only major problem the game faces right now is lag. It’s *really* bad. Gravity is claiming to be on the situation, but I think it may take them a while to get this one done. See, before beta2, the server sould handle about 10k users, while the new beta has problems handling just over 3k users. I hope they get it fixed soon.

Dear God!

20 Days without a post! Why didn’t someone email me!?! Oh, I guess I need to have a following of readers for that.

Anyway, to explain where I’ve been, my best friend did the most horrible thing I can imagine to yours truly. He talked me into signing up for the Ragnarok open beta.

Ragnarok is a new MMORPG (Massivly Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) currently in it’s beta stage. Think of it like Everquest but with good graphics. I’ll see if I can get some screenshots up in the image gallery later today. Oh, and Gravity’s stopped taking registrations, so don’t ask how to get hooked up.

Anyway’s, this game has just sucked the soul right out of me. I’ve literaly done very little outside of Ragnarok since around Dec. 6. Well exxcept for that short bout in the hospital, which brings me to……

Crystal went into false labor about a week ago. That was a fund 6 hours of doing nothing and a night of sleeping on an uncomfortable chair. I avoided this fate this weekend as I refused to go to the hospital until she was absolutely sure she was in labor.

I don’t have too much more to add. In case I get too wrapped up in Ragnarok, you guys have a happy holiday.
